Fort George

Fort George

13.7 miles / approximately 30 minutes by car depending on traffic

Fort George is an impressive artillery fortification just a short drive from Inverness heading east. The walls are a massive 1 mile long.

There is a lot to explore and it may surprise you in size. If the sun is shining, better still as this attraction is mostly outdoors. There is a Highland Exhibition and this is indoors and worth a visit.

A little bit of history – after the defeat at Culloden, Bonnie Prince Charlie II created this mighty defence against any further Jacobite unrest. It has never been attacked! It was built in 1748 and is still being used by the military. You may see a few soldiers during your visit.

You will see garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of weapons – including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches – the display is an impressive insight into 18th century military life.

It is worth visiting the chapel to see the stained glass bagpiper and holds many old colours or battle flags.

A great place to visit.
